What are LASIK and vision correction surgery options?

As much as we love eyeglasses at Blahnik Eye Care we know that some patients want to be free of eyeglasses and contact lenses. We are happy to provide LASIK and vision correction consultations to discuss these options. Most patients ask about laser eye surgery, formally called LASIK (short for Laser-assisted in situ Keratomilieusis.)  It works by changing the shape of the eye’s cornea to allow light to focus on the retina.  This improves your vision and can overcome nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The procedure has a high percent success rate in helping people avoid needing to use their glasses or contact lenses anymore.  Some requirements for LASIK surgery are being 18 years of age, stable vision, healthy eyes, not pregnant or nursing, and not having corneal disease or a thin cornea. In addition to LASIK there are other surgical options including SMILE, photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), implantable collamer lens (ICL), and refractive lens exchange (RLE).  The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for any vision correction/refractive surgery procedure is to have a comprehensive eye exam and discussion with your eye care provider. Make sure you discuss options, risks and most importantly expectations.

How do I schedule the procedure?

Once we determine if a vision correction surgery option is right for you, the next step is selecting a surgeon who is licensed, board-certified and experienced with these procedures. Also ask for referrals and check online reviews.  Our optometrists will help you through the process of selecting the right surgeon.
The next step will be a consultation in the surgeon’s office to review your candidacy, medical history, and schedule an appointment for the procedure. We recommend not wearing your contact lenses for a few days before the consultation and surgical procedure. Once you are determined to be stable following the vision correction surgery you will be referred back to our office for co-management of your post operation appointments.
